Mixed Dementia

Mixed dementia [6] occurs when two or more types of dementia coexist together. Usually, this occurs when Alzheimer’s coexist with vascular dementia – plaques that characterize Alzheimer’s disease affect the blood vessels and reduce the blood supply to the brain, leading to vascular dementia. There have also been reported cases of Alzheimer’s disease coexisting with Lewy body dementia and in extremely rare circumstances the three conditions coexist. It presents with a variety of symptoms which may vary from some of the symptoms of one disease to a combination of the spectrum of symptoms of all diseases involved in the mix. There is currently no treatment modality for mixed dementia but it can treated symptomatically to improve the quality of life of patients with the disease.
