Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) – An Overview

What Are the Causes of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo?

The major cause of BPPV is disturbance in the interior portion of your inner ear. The semicircular canals and otoliths in your ears contain fluid that moves whenever your body’s position changes. These canals are extremely sensitive and any little change in body position will cause significant effects. BPPV occurs when small crystals of calcium carbonate that are usually found in another portion of the ear break free and enter the semicircular canals. It can also occur when these crystals grow inside the semicircular canals. Development of crystals in the semicircular canal causes the transmission of confusing signals to the brain about your body’s position.
