Effects of the Ear on BPPV

The inner portion of the ear contains a tiny organ known as the vestibular labyrinth. It consists of three loop-shaped structures, called semicircular canals. These canals contain fluid and hairlike structure that help monitor head rotation. Other vestibular organs such as the otolith organs control vertical and horizontal movement of the head. They also control your head’s position in relation to gravity. These otolith organs contain crystals that heighten your sensitivity to gravity.
These crystals can get dislodged and move into one of the semicircular canals. When this occurs, the semicircular canals become sensitive to head positions that it would normally not respond to. This is what causes dizziness.
