Do Seizures Cause Brain Damage?

Marks of Brain Injury and Brain Atrophy

A study made in 2017 [3] tried to find markers of brain injury in certain people that had specific type of focal epilepsy. For this they analyzed tissue samples from post-surgery of 20 people that experienced seizures frequently and were resistant to treatment with antiseizure medications. The researchers discovered that even though there were marks of injury in the area of the seizure, the marks were not seen in adjacent areas. For this reason, the theory that recurrent seizures cause damage to healthy brain tissues is arguable.

A meta-analysis done in 2017 [4] that involved 42 articles on temporal lobe epilepsy that was resistant to treatment with antiseizure medications. The discoveries made Include:

  • That there was a progressive loss of neurons or connections between neurons in temporal lobe epilepsy.
  • Although, there is still insufficient study to confirm that this is due to the seizures.

More study is needed to find out if the brain atrophy is as a result of aging or a progression in epilepsy disease.
