Supplemental Treatments

There are various types of supplemental treatments for tonic-clonic seizures.
Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) therapy involves implanting an electrical device that automatically helps stimulate the vagus nerve in your neck. You may still need to take medications but in lower doses.
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) involves adding electrodes to a part of the brain called the thalamus. The objective of DBS is to modulate specific brain circuits that should ultimately help reduce or prevent the frequency of seizures. The DBS devices transfer either constant or occasional stimulation. The device is placed under the skin of your chest and controls the amount of stimulation produced.
Responsive neurostimulation (RNS) systems monitor the brain’s electrical activities and send stimulation to the brain when it suspects a seizure or unusual electrical activity. It also requires implanting electrical devices on the surface of your brain or within your brain tissue where it can detect seizure activities.
