Dietary Therapy

The ketogenic diet is used for intractable epilepsy in young children. Research has shown that the seizures improve when placed under this dietary Therapy. However, the way and pattern in which the diet works are still quite unknown, as it contains a fat-to-carbohydrate ratio of 4:1. This dietary therapy is not suitable for adults due to the difficulty in maintaining it. A ketotic state is achieved as it provides a considerable number of calories meant for nutrition from fat and protein. Studies have shown a significant reduction in seizure frequency in 50% of patients placed in this diet.
