VR Motion Sickness: Causes, Treatment, and Prevention

Preventive Measures for VR Motion Sickness

Although they have to be scientifically proven, various products have been designed to prevent VR motion sickness. Some of these include:

  • Cybershoes: these shoes are worn while players are sitting, and they can help in preventing motion sickness.
  • Virtual reality treadmill: these are a special type of shoe that enables players to walk while they are actually just standing still while playing VR games.
  • Low-latency VR games: the time it takes for in-app motion to send signals to the brain is referred to as “latency.” Games with lower latency mean that there is less delay between what occurs in the game and your brain’s perception of it.

Other treatments and strategies that can be implemented to prevent motion sickness include the following:

  • Playing on an empty stomach: It is advisable not to eat a heavy meal when you want to play a VR game, as this will help reduce vomiting and nausea.
  • Take medication: Players can also consider taking certain medications a couple of hours before they begin playing. Some of which include Benadryl and Dramamine.
  • Scopolamine patch: this is an anticholinergic drug [4] that is prescribed through a patch that is worn behind the user’s ear. This patch is used to relieve vomiting and nausea that is a result of surgery, and it can be worn for a period of about three days.
