What does a focal seizure feel like?

A focal seizure will give you a motor or sensory feeling. Your exact sensation will depend on the part of the brain involved and whether you lose consciousness.

There are different types of focal seizures and each of them gives a different feeling. Here are the different types and what they feel like:

Focal aware seizure

You may be having a focal aware seizure if you are conscious when it occurs. It is also referred to as a simple partial seizure or aura. It may occur on its own or before the seizure progresses. Certain things you may experience during a focal aware seizure include:

  • Stiffness or shaking in one part of the body, like your arm or hand
  • Tingling in your arms or legs
  • Rising sensation in your stomach
  • Feeling like an event is reoccurring (déjà vu)
  • Extreme emotions such as joy, anxiety, or fear
  • An overall strange feeling
