What Causes Bursitis?

Osteoarthritis

Besides rheumatoid arthritis, you have to watch for osteoarthritis as well. According to the survey published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), osteoarthritis is a primary cause of disability, affecting 32.5 million people in the United States. It occurs when the cartilage in the joints wears out, causing friction between the bones. People with Osteoarthritis suffer from severe joint pains, stiffness, and swelling, leading to a decreased range of movements.

Being the most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis is also known as degenerative arthritis or “wear and tear” arthritis. Risk factors include being overweight, family history, advanced age, genetics, race, and previous injury (an anterior cruciate ligament, for example). It is possible to treat this condition with medications, physical therapies, surgeries, maintaining adequate weight, and the regular practice of physical exercises, in addition to avoiding repetitive movements. Always choose low-impact activities that are easy on the joints like swimming, golfing, canoeing, and walking.
