What Causes Bursitis?

Continuous Pressure on Bursa

This is another common cause of bursitis. When people do activities that encourage the continuous compression and pressure of the bone or muscles on the bursa, this can ultimately lead to the development of bursitis. For example, kneeling on hard surfaces to clean compresses the bursa that is in the patella, and this can ultimately lead to knee bursitis, which is also called “handmaid’s knee” due to the way by which people develop this type of bursitis. [5]
In addition, apart from working on your knees on hard surfaces for prolonged periods, playing sports in which the knee often falls can also lead to the formation of bursitis.
Incorrect postures of long-time sitting or standing could result in bursitis as well. Bursitis could affect your elbows, shoulders, knees, hips, thighs, buttocks, Achilles tendons, and sometimes even heels. With constant pressure on the joints, the inflamed synovium will cause synovitis, and the affected parts could become swollen, stiff, red, and painful.
