What Causes Bursitis?

Infections

Infectious bursitis, or septic bursitis, could be a life-threatening condition that happens when a bursa is infected either from the direct introduction of bacteria through skin trauma or puncture, via contiguous spread from cellulitis, or due to contiguous septic arthritis or bacteremia. Bacteria, viruses or fungi can come into contact with the joints and trigger inflammation. Examples of microorganisms that can infect the joints are salmonella (through the ingestion of contaminated food), Staphylococci, chlamydia and gonorrhea (through unprotected sex) and hepatitis C (can be contracted by blood, usually with shared needles or transfusions). One of the possible diagnosis methods is needle aspiration (arthrocentesis). Doctors may use a thin needle to drain the fluid for laboratory testing. The procedure is relatively quick and safe, without much pain. Septic bursitis could turn into a serious medical condition if left untreated. In many cases, antibiotic treatment can eliminate the infection in the joint, but sometimes it becomes chronic. [6]
