Pleurisy – Diagnosis & Treatments

Diagnosis

The most important thing in diagnosing pleurisy is to know the location and cause of the swelling or irritation. Doctors run some physical tests and ask for medical history (to know if it has existed in your family or if you have had it before). Doctors order the following tests:

Chest x-rays

This test allows the doctor to see if there is any inflammation in the lungs. Sometimes, doctors order a decubitus chest X-ray; this is an x-ray taken while the patient lies on the side of their body. The decubitus test allows flowing fluid to form a layer and helps to confirm if there is any fluid buildup.

Chest X-ray show doctors if the lungs are fully inflating (during inspiration) or if there is a build-up of fluid or air between the lungs and ribs. They also check for any other abnormality within the chest cavity.
