Fiber and Ulcerative Colitis: Is there a Connection?

Cutting Back on Fiber during a Flare

During a flare-up, you might think about switching to a low-fiber diet if fiber seems to make your symptoms worse. The National Health Service claims that eating less fiber can help you pass less stool and have fewer bowel motions.

During a flare, you may want to avoid the following fiber-rich possible trigger foods:

  • Fruits that have seeds and skin
  • Raw vegetables
  • Cruciferous plants (like broccoli and cauliflower)
  • Whole grains
  • Nuts

Also, you can experiment with various methods to lessen or make fiber simpler to digest in a food. In order to reduce the amount of insoluble fibers consumed, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation advises cooking vegetables until they are tender, peeling fruits and vegetables, and removing seeds.

Your health may suffer if certain nutrients are removed from your diet. To ensure a low-fiber diet is safe for you, talk to a doctor or dietitian.
