Types of Ulcerative Colitis

There are different types of ulcerative colitis, depending on the location of the disease in the large intestine.

  • Ulcerative proctitis: This type is found in the rectum. The major sign of the disease shown here is rectal bleeding
  • Proctosigmoiditis: This type is found in the rectum and sigmoid colon. Tenesmus, diarrhea and pain are signs shown in this type
  • Left-side colitis: Here, the inflammation extends from the rectum up to the splenic flexure. Bloody diarrhea is sign in this type
  • Pancolitis: This type involves inflammation throughout the entire colon. Bloody diarrhea, severe pain, weight loss are all signs of this type.
