Possible risk factors that contribute to developing type 2 diabetes

There are several factors that can contribute to your chances of developing type 2 diabetes. Some of which includes your family history, which can’t be changed, lifestyle factors like exercise and diet, which can be modified to reduce your chances of developing the condition.

Here are some of the factors that increases the risk for developing type 2 diabetes:

  • If you have prediabetes
  • If you have multiple gene mutation associated with type 2 diabetes
  • If you have a family history of diabetes
  • If you have high blood pressure
  • If you are above the age 45
  • If you are overweight
  • If you are not as physically active as you used to
  • If you have had gastational diabetes (diabetes while pregnant)
  • If you have given birth to a baby that weighed over 9 pounds
  • If you have high triglycerides
  • If you have a low level of HDL, called “good cholesterol”
  • If you have depression
  • If you have a history of any heart disease or stroke
  • If you were assigned male at birth
  • If you have acanthosis nigricans [2]
  • If you have polycystic [3] (PCOS)
