Dry Throat: Symptoms, Causes and Treatments

Dehydration

Dehydration is simply not consuming enough liquids. When you’re dehydrated, the body’s saliva production is affected, which causes it to significantly reduce. This results in the throat getting little or no moisture and this leads to a dry throat.

To treat this, take a lot of fluids during the day. The recommended amount of water to consume varies [2], but an average of 11.5 cups for women and 15.5 cups for men is a good amount. Also, certain foods, fruits and vegetables can provide about 20% of the fluid you need. It is very important that you’re taking healthy fluids that actually hydrate like water, not coffee or carbonated drinks, which can result in the body losing water.

When You Sleep with Your Mouth Opened

If every morning, when you wake up, your mouth is dry, it may be because when you sleep your mouth is open. This causes the saliva that usually keeps your throat and mouth moist to get dried up by air. Congestion from chronic allergies [3] or a cold, or a deviated septum are causes of mouth breathing, which result in a dry throat.

To treat a congestion problem, you can do so with an adhesive nose strip which you apply to the bridge of your nose which helps open up your nose while you sleep.
