10 Common Signs of Ear Infection (Otitis media)

Fluid draining from the ear

Fluid drainage from the ear is seen in roughly 10% of cases. In some cases of middle ear infections, the eardrum can tear. This tear is a result of pressure build-up in the middle ear. When the tear occurs, fluid can drain from it causing the fluid discharge that is rare in this condition. This fluid can bloody, cloudy, or pus-like.

Poor appetite

Ear Infections in general cause malaise that can result in poor appetite. Infants would often refuse to feed when ear infections are present.

Poor response to sounds or calls

This due to mild impairment in the conduction of sound waves during an ear infection. This makes it difficult to hear sounds properly. Thus, some individuals with ear infections would not respond to calls or sounds as they ought to.
