Hearing Loss: Types, Symptoms, Causes & Treatment

Types of Hearing Loss

There are three types of hearing loss:

  • Conductive hearing loss: in this type, there is an obstruction that prevents sound from traveling through your middle ear or outer ear.
  • Sensorineural hearing loss: This kind of hearing loss develops over time if your inner ear is harmed by something. Very rapid sensorineural hearing loss occurs seldom. This is sudden deafness or sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL). SSHL can occur suddenly or gradually over a few days.
  • Mixed: This occurs when you have problems with both your inner and outer ears (conductive hearing loss and sensorineural hearing loss, respectively).
