Eczema and Hard Water – What’s the Connection?

Evidence on hard water and eczema

According to studies published in Clinical and experimental allergy, hard water and atopic eczema are closely related. It is important to note that atopic eczema is the worst type of cancer. Studies also show that young children who swim in hard water regularly are more susceptible to atopic eczema [3]. More research needs to be done to understand this relationship.

Research also shows that people who swim in hard water regularly may experience:

  • Increase the level of cytokines. Cytokines [4] are proteins that facilitate inflammation.
  • Reduce skin hydration
  • Increase skin redness

Studies show that adding calcium to the skin may reduce its ability to repair worn-out tissues. Hard water contains minerals that help reduce the PH of the water. Therefore, bathing or swimming in hard water may affect the PH of the skin and the effectiveness of the skin barrier.

Hard water also contains calcium and magnesium ions that bind to certain particles in soap, called surfactants. These ions make it difficult to rinse the soap away and create a “soap scum” or residue on the skin. This can lead to irritation on the skin and weaken the skin.
