Eczema vs. Hives: What Is the Difference?

Types of Hives

There are different types of hives. They include:

  • Infection-induced hives: Infections like viruses and bacteria cause this type of hives. Examples of these infections include viral hepatitis and urinary tract infections [6].
  • Chronic hives: This is the type that lasts for several months or even up to a year. They are usually symptoms of underlying diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus [7] and thyroid disorders.
  • Temperature-induced hives: Hives are sometimes formed on the skin of some people who react to temperature changes. For instance, cold-induced hives usually develop in people whose skin is very sensitive to cold water.
  • Dermatographism: Acute hives that normally disappear on their own even without treatment.
