Essential Oils for Eczema Treatment

Types of Essential Oil to Use for Eczema

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is extracted from tea tree plants. It is commonly used for a variety of skin conditions, such as:

  • Nail fungus
  • Athlete’s foot [1]
  • Insect bite
  • Head lice

Tea tree oil has been proven to be an effective anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial treatment.

A group of researchers did a study in 2010. This involved the comparison of various herbs and minerals for treating contact dermatitis. Tea tree was revealed to be the most effective of them all.

However, another study involving undiluted tea tree oil has been found to cause contact dermatitis for some people that are allergic to one or more components of the oil.

It is important to dilute tea tree oil with a carrier oil as it is strong and can cause skin irritation if proper caution is not taken. Examples of carrier oil include fractionated coconut oil, argan oil and sweet almond oil.

You should also never swallow essential oils as they can be toxic.

Do a skin patch test before applying essential oils.
