Metatarsalgia (Ball of Foot Pain): Symptoms and Causes

How is metatarsalgia diagnosed?

Metatarsalgia may not be serious in some cases. However, if the pain persists or worsens after changing your footwear or resting your feet, then you have to see a healthcare provider.

Your doctor will evaluate your foot and tell you to walk so they can observe your gait. They will also ask you questions about your activities and when the pain started. If your doctor thinks other factors are responsible for the pain, he will recommend other tests. Some of these tests may include:

  • An X-ray to rule out a stress fracture
  • A blood test to check for uric acid, which is an indication of gout
  • An ultrasound test to look at soft tissue problems like neuromas or bursitis, which may contribute to metatarsalgia
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to check for evidence of arthritis and possible injuries
