Who is at risk of metatarsalgia?

Metatarsalgia occurs on the foot, individuals who play high-impact sports that involve running and jumping have a higher risk of developing the condition. Athletes who wear shoes with spikes or shoes without good support are also at a high risk of developing metatarsalgia.
People who have high arches are also more likely to have metatarsalgia more than others. This is because high arches put more pressure on the metatarsals and heels. People who have their second toe to be longer than their big toe may also experience metatarsalgia more frequently.
Other people who are at a greater risk of developing metatarsalgia include:
- Older people
- Women who wear high heels
- People who wear tight or loose shoes
- People who have underlying cons such as inflammatory arthritis or foot deformities
