Revive Your Stride: Achilles Tendon Treatment for Pain Relief

Surgery

If home remedy does not reduce pain or relieve inflammation, your doctor may recommend surgery to repair your Achilles’ tendon. If the condition gets severe and is left untreated, you become more prone to an Achilles rupture, which may require emergency medical attention. This can lead to sharp pain in the heel area.

Depending on the severity of your achilles tendinitis, your doctor may recommend some options for Achilles’ tendon surgery based on how severe the condition is and where it is located. Surgery usually involves:

  • Removing bone spurs (growths of extra bone), damaged tendon tissue, or both.
  • Lengthening your calf muscles (gastrocnemius recession)
  • Strengthening the area by moving another tendon to the heel bone
  • Repairing the tendon

In most cases, your doctor may refer you to an orthopedic surgeon to determine which procedure will be best for you.
