What Causes Headaches?

Hormonal Changes

Hormone headaches are attributed to women due to the frequency of hormonal changes, especially estrogen, starting at puberty until menopause in some women. In contrast, it may continue after menopause in others. Hormonal changes frequently happen in women, and headaches may accompany them. For example, menstrual migraines occur during the monthly menstruation period due to the low estrogen levels during this time. These types are usually severe and may last up to days. [4]

Intense head pain may occur while on a break from taking oral contraceptives. Women approaching menopause and after may experience frequent headaches due to a disruption in the normal hormone levels. Pregnancy may also trigger headaches within the first two trimesters because of sudden and frequent changes in hormone levels.
