9 Symptoms of Heart Failure

Heart Palpitations

Heart palpitations can often feel like your heart has skipped a beat or taken an extra beat. It happens when the heart is beating in rapid, sometimes irregular successions. It can sometimes feel like your heart is pounding violently against your ribcage. You become acutely aware of each beat.

Palpitations are a sign of heart failure but can also happen due to a lot of reasons not related to heart failure. Stressful physical activity and shock can induce palpitations. If you frequently experience palpitations, you should see a doctor or cardiologist who will recommend tests which you should take. These tests can help distinguish between benign heart palpitations and those caused by serious medical conditions such as heart failure.

Abdominal Swelling

This is sometimes called a distended abdomen or swollen belly. It happens when your stomach becomes larger than normal. The swelling may be painful or just uncomfortable. It’s a common problem that may happen due to a variety of causes.

Ascites [5] is the kind of abdominal swelling caused by heart failure. [6] It happens due to the build-up of fluid in the abdomen that eventually causes it to swell and protrude. Ascites may also be caused by liver cirrhosis so it is always a good idea to check out with your physician for a proper diagnosis.
