9 Signs of Thrombocytopenia (Low Blood Platelets)

Heavy menstrual flow

Longer, heavier menstrual flows are a sign of low platelet levels in the blood. Period duration and intensity of menstrual flow vary from woman to woman. Depending on the severity of the thrombocytopenia, people who are heavy bleeders might not notice the difference.

A sudden increase in the volume of period blood might be indicative of thrombocytopenia. This may also be caused by other medical conditions so it is advisable to consult a doctor immediately after this change is noticed.

Petechiae or superficial bleeding

Petechiae appear as small pin-pointed red or purple spots on the skin of the legs, stomach and arms. They may even appear on the buttocks and the insides of the mouth and eyelids. Petechiae can be mistaken for rashes. Rashes turn pale when you press them. Petechiae don’t.

Petechia is caused by bleeding that occurs in the subcutaneous tissue as a result of blood vessel leakages. Petechia is similar to purpura in this regard.
