Low Hemoglobin: Symptoms, Causes and Treatments

Maximizing Iron Absorption

Consuming iron in foods or supplements is important. However, you should be able to absorb the consumed iron. Foods rich in vitamin C such as citrus fruits, strawberries and leafy green vegetables can increase the amount of iron absorbed. Consuming a vitamin C supplement can also help. Vitamin A and beta-carotene can help the body in absorbing and using iron. Foods rich in vitamin A include fish, squash, kale and collards, liver and sweet potatoes.

It is possible to increase your hemoglobin level through changes in the foods you eat and supplements. It is important to talk to a doctor to help with treatment especially when the condition is severe.
