Main Causes of Low Platelet Count

Low platelet production

Your platelets are produced in the bone marrow, which is a spongy tissue inside your bones. All your blood cells, not just platelets, are made here. Sometimes the reason your platelet count drops is that something has gone wrong in your body and interfered with the production of platelets here. If you have bone marrow problems, such as cancer, you may produce fewer platelets.

Several things can interfere with platelet production. Some of these factors include: [2]

  • Vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Folate deficiency
  • Leukemia and other cancers that affect the blood or bone marrow
  • Viral infections like HIV, chickenpox, hepatitis C, and Epstein Barr
  • Liver cirrhosis
  • Chemotherapy and radiation therapy
  • Aplastic anemia
  • Overconsumption of alcohol
