Main Causes of Low Platelet Count

Platelet destruction

Like many blood cells, platelets have a short lifespan. In healthy people, this lifespan is about 10 days [4]. Your low platelet count may be caused by an increase in how fast these blood cells are broken down. If your platelets are destroyed faster than they are made, you are likely to develop thrombocytopenia.

There are several reasons your body may use up or destroy platelets faster. The causes can range from pregnancy to bacterial infections [5] in the blood. Certain autoimmune diseases like lupus can cause what is known as immune thrombocytopenia [6]. This makes your immune system wrongly target and destroy healthy platelets. The cause of immune thrombocytopenia is not always traceable. In these cases, doctors refer to it as idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.

Certain medications and rare disorders [7] like thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura or hemolytic uremic syndrome that causes a steep drop in platelets can also cause thrombocytopenia.

Conclusion

Many conditions can cause you to have a low platelet count. Sometimes the condition is temporary and resolves on its own, such as when it is caused by pregnancy. Other times it is caused by more serious health problems. The only way to know for sure is to see a doctor. They will recommend the most appropriate treatment for you after evaluating you.
