What Causes Hemorrhoids?

Pregnancy and Old age

Pregnant women have often complained about suffering from recurrent hemorrhoids, especially during the final trimester or immediately after giving birth. Studies have linked the cause of hemorrhoids during pregnancy to be due to:

  • Increased blood volume, leading to larger veins
  • The weight of the baby and the growing uterus pressing against the veins near your anus
  • Hormone fluctuations

Symptoms range from itching to swelling, to bleeding. Piles may disappear immediately after childbirth and without any active treatment. Not all women develop hemorrhoids during pregnancy.

You can develop hemorrhoids at any age, but an elderly person has a higher risk. [5] As the body gets older, the tissues supporting the veins in the rectum and anus tend to weaken and stretch. The weak veins make it easier to develop hemorrhoids at the slightest bit of strain. Under similar circumstances, older people may come down with piles faster than younger persons.
