6 Main Types of Hernia

Epigastric Hernia

An epigastric hernia [6] occurs when fat pushes out through muscle in the epigastric region of the abdomen. It occurs in the middle of the abdomen, between the navel and the breastbone. They are more common in men than women.

Epigastric hernias are small and usually show no symptoms. Sometimes they cause pain and discomfort in the upper abdomen. They are easier to notice when there is pressure on the abdominal wall due to laughter or bowel movement.

Surgery is required to treat this hernia. It can lead to serious complications if left untreated.

You may have more than one epigastric hernia at a time.
