9 Common Causes of Hiccups

Drinking a lot of carbonated drinks

Carbonated or fizzy drinks contain a lot of gaseous content in this and this is one of the major reasons it causes hiccups. When you drink a soda or a carbonated drink, at the first sip, you swallow an amount of carbon dioxide in the process, which may try to escape you somehow. The carbon dioxide bubbles from the soda or carbonated drinks will then start to irritate your diaphragm, causing it to jerk uncontrollably in a bid to suck in the air suddenly, making the “hic” sounds until all the carbon dioxide escapes from the diaphragm. Avoiding fizzy or carbonated drinks can help you prevent having hiccups. However, this may be difficult for a lot of people. In the USA alone, about 30% of adults consume sodas and carbonated drinks daily. Hence, if you are a soda fan and you constantly have hiccups, there’s a high chance that’s the reason.
