Common Symptoms of Hip Pain

Swelling around the Hip

Swelling may occur around the joint of the affected hip. Many conditions can cause this. Hip pain from inflammatory arthritis, for example, can cause the joints to become inflamed. This can present externally as swelling that is often painful.

Many types of inflammatory arthritis can cause hip pain and swelling. Rheumatoid arthritis is arguably the most known inflammatory arthritis. This swelling results from the inflammation of the synovium [8], the membrane lining the joints.

If you experience swelling around your hip along with pain, it might be a good idea to see a doctor. A proper evaluation will reveal the cause of the pain and swelling. Sometimes this can be something that’ll eventually resolve on its own. Other times, it can be life-threatening. The Mayo Clinic [9] recommends seeing a doctor immediately, especially if the swelling is sudden.
