The Similarities and Differences between IBS and IBD

Differences in Demographics

While it is true that both conditions affect people of all age groups and are especially more prominent in young people, Irritable Bowel Syndrome has been found to be more common in females than in men. Irritable Bowel Syndrome also affects people of every race.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease is most common in Jewish people and those from Northern Europe and is not more common with any particular gender.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Inflammatory Bowel Disease may have some similar symptoms, but they are very different disorders and vary in severity, prognosis, prevalence and even in treatment methods. Understanding the differences between these two conditions is important in diagnosing and deciding on the right treatment plan for each condition.
