The Similarities and Differences between IBS and IBD

Differences in Treatments

In cases of misdiagnosis, treating IBS with the drugs used in treating IBD will not yield the required results. This also applies to cases where drugs intended for use in IBS are used to treat IBD.

The treatment for IBS mainly involves making changes to the diet and other lifestyle changes. Other simple medications can also be used to relieve symptoms like pain, diarrhea and constipation. Some of the drugs used include; laxatives, anti-emetics, pain relief medications and so on.

However, the treatment for IBD is more complex; requiring more powerful drugs, hospitalization in some cases, nutritional support, and in many cases, the patients may even require surgery to treat the condition. Drugs used in treating IBD include; anti-inflammatory drugs like; corticosteroids and aminosalicylates, immune suppressants like; cyclosporine and methotrexate and antibiotics like metronidazole and ciprofloxacin. The treatment for IBD always depends on the type of IBD diagnosed.
