The Similarities and Differences between IBS and IBD

Differences in Abdominal Pain

Abdominal pain is a symptom seen in Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Inflammatory Bowel Disease, but abdominal pain’s nature and location are not exactly the same in both conditions. In Irritable Bowel Syndrome, the pain can be spread over the abdomen’s wide area or localized to the lower-left area. This pain usually gets worse while eating, and whenever gas is in the gut. The pain can be relieved by a bowel movement.

In Inflammatory Bowel Disease, the pain can occur anywhere in the abdomen, and its location usually indicates the type of IBD. The pain of ulcerative colitis is usually felt on the left side of the abdomen.
