Differences between IBS and IBD

Gut Inflammation & Damage
Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome are very different conditions. They differ in nature, specific or diagnostic symptoms, treatment, prevalence, prognosis and so on. Here are some things that differentiate these conditions from each other;
In Inflammatory Bowel Disease, there is inflammation and damage to the structure of the gut. The origin of this inflammation is not really known. In IBD, this inflammation is the main issue. But in Irritable Bowel Syndrome, this is not the case. On examination with X-ray, biopsy or endoscopy, the damage to the structure of the gut is visible in IBD while in IBS, this is not seen. IBS usually doesn’t cause ulcerations in the bowel, and it only involves the colon.
