Kidney Stones: What Are Your Treatment Options?

Lithotripsy

Also known as shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) [3]. This treatment method is usually cultivated when the kidney stones are large.

The idea behind this method of treatment is to break down the large stones using shock waves. The use of X-ray or ultrasound to locate the object’s exact position, then there is the repeated firing of shock waves to break down the stone into smaller particles, making it possible for it to pass through the urine.

Shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) is widely used and considered effective; it does not work too well on hard rock particles and could still lead to some side effects.
