Kidney Stones: What Are Your Treatment Options?

Ureteroscopy (URS)

This treatment method is used to treat stones stuck in the bladder or ureter with the aid of an instrument called a ureteroscope.

The ureteroscope is of two types; the rigid ureteroscope and the flexible ureteroscope. You make use of the rigid when unwanted objects are in the lower part of the ureter, and the flexible ureteroscope is used when the kidney unwanted particles are in the upper part of the ureter. This instrument makes it possible for the doctor, also referred to as a urologist [4], to see the stone without making any incision. The stones are then grabbed and removed; bigger stones that may seem impossible to remove are broken into smaller pieces with a laser.

Immediately the kidney stones are removed either in pieces or whole; there is the application of the stent. A stent [5] is a rigid, tiny plastic tube that may be of different types to hold the ureter open to allow the urine to drain out of the kidney into the bladder. The stent is then removed four to ten days later and no longer because leaving the stent for a longer period can cause an infection and loss of kidney function.
