Kidney Stones – What Foods to Avoid

Sodium-rich Foods

Reduce the amount of salt present in your diet. Table salt contains a lot of sodium. High concentrations of sodium in the body encourage the build-up of calcium in the urine. This happens because sodium and calcium share the same transport in the kidney. More sodium in your diet results in a leakage of calcium in the urine, upping your risk of developing more stones.

Removing table salt from your diet often isn’t enough to curb your sodium intake. It’s best to avoid canned foods and packaged foods in your diet. If you decide to eat processed foods, you should always check the labels before buying them to see just how much salt they contain. Avoid eating at fast food joints as their foods tend to be high in sodium.

Solid foods are not the only sources of sodium in your diet. Pay attention to what you drink too.
