Kidney Stones – What Foods to Avoid

Sodas and Sugary Drinks

Don’t drink sodas. Don’t drink colas. Colas are high in phosphate which can lead to the formation of kidney stones. Calcium phosphate stones can form in the kidney when calcium combines with mineral phosphorus.

Fruit drinks rich in citrate are particularly helpful in breaking down kidney stones and preventing their formation. Lemonade [2], for example, has been shown to improve the condition of people living with kidney stones by preventing calcium and oxalates from binding. Not all drinks are good for people with stones though.

You should avoid drinks that are high in sugar. Yes, this includes certain fruit drinks. Always check the amount of sugar you consume. Foods high in sucrose or fructose increase your predisposition to developing kidney stones.
