Kidney Stones – What Foods to Avoid

Animal Protein

Consuming a lot of animal protein increases your chances of developing more kidney stones. Cut down on your consumption of beef, chicken, fish, egg and dairy products. You should avoid organ meats in particular as these tend to be high in animal proteins.

Some fish and organ red meats are high in purine, a chemical compound that increases the production of uric acid. Uric acid stones are another well-known type of kidney stone and a high concentration of uric acid in the urine increases the risk of them forming. Cutting down on animal proteins can help reduce the chances of uric acid stone formation.

Protein is an important nutrient in the body and it is unlikely that you’ll need to cut it out completely. You may need to speak to your doctor to decide how much is appropriate. Replacing animal proteins with plant proteins might also be a good option. Remember that some plants are high in oxalates so you’ll have to choose carefully. Beans and lentils are good animal protein replacements.
