What Causes Kidney Stones?

Dehydration or Inadequate Water Intake

Water is very important in kidney function and helps the kidney to produce dilute urine. It also helps to prevent the formation of kidney stones. Inadequate water intake facilitates the formation of kidney stones and also promotes bacteria growth in the urinary tract.

Increased Concentration of Calcium Oxalate in the Urine

This is one of the major causes of kidney stones. Diet rich in calcium oxalate, ingesting high doses of vitamin D, intestinal bypass surgery, and some metabolic disorders can result in n increase in the concentration of calcium oxalate in the urine and if this gets more than the fluid in the urine can dilute, calcium crystals will begin to form and deposit along the urinary tract.

Kidney Diseases

Kidney diseases affect kidney function and impair the ability to filter certain substances from the blood or absorb some substances from the urine. This can cause an abnormal increase in the concentration of some crystal-forming substances in the urine or a decrease in the fluid content of urine resulting in the development of kidney stones.
