What Causes Kidney Stones?

Genetic Diseases

Some genetic disorders or diseases promote the formation of kidney stones by increasing the formation of crystal-forming substances, decreasing their excretion, reducing kidney function, and so on. An example of such genetic disorders is Cystinuria which causes the leak of cystine into the urine and facilitates the formation of cystine stones. [3]

Family History

In some cases, it is just a case of family genes. People who have close relations with kidney stones are also at risk of developing kidney stones as well. This may be a result of some inherited disorder or genetic abnormality.

Medications

Some drugs have been found to cause kidney stones. They include; some antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin and Sulfa antibiotics, some diuretics used in treating high blood pressure, and some medicines used in the treatment of HIV/AIDS. Laxatives when used excessively can cause the development of kidney stones. Supplements like Vitamin C and some other dietary supplements as well as Calcium based antacids can also cause the formation of kidney stones or increase the risk of developing kidney stones.

Drugs like Topiramate used in the treatment of migraines and seizures can also cause the formation of kidney stones.
