Knee Popping and Pain: Causes and Treatment

Diagnosing the knee pain

A medical professional will examine your knee physically, noting any swelling, bruising, or other abnormalities that have appeared. In order to determine what happens when your knee is bent or rotated, some range-of-motion tests will probably also be performed.

For instance, the Lachman test and the anterior drawer test may be used by the doctor to examine your ACL stability if they suspect an ACL injury. A McMurray test, which places some stress on the meniscus to evaluate how it responds, may be done if it appears that there may be a meniscus tear.

Imaging testing will probably come next. Often, an MRI scan is performed after an X-ray to obtain a final diagnosis.
