Causes and Risk Factors of Restless Leg Syndrome

Primary Cause

Genetic Predisposition

Genetics is perhaps the biggest suspect in the cause of restless leg syndrome, particularly when the symptoms begin before age 40. Nearly half [2] of those with restless leg syndrome have a family history of the condition. According to a recent paper [3] published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, having an immediate family member with this disorder dramatically increases your chances of developing it, too.

Researchers have mapped out chromosome sites with genes that may be responsible for this syndrome. Although this is still not fully understood yet, researchers believe mutations in the genes alter dopamine pathways in the brain and interfere with iron regulation.
