Nocturnal Leg Cramps: Causes, Treatment & Prevention

When to See Your Healthcare Provider

If your leg cramps are excruciatingly painful, persistent, or occur regularly, consult a medical professional. In addition, if you experience any of the following symptoms in addition to leg cramps, consult your physician straight away:

  • Muscle cramp in other parts of your body
  • The pain is serious.
  • Leg swells or becomes numb.
  • The skin in your legs changes.
  • Repeatedly waking up with leg cramps.
  • You’re having trouble sleeping because of your leg cramps.
  • You either have electrolyte imbalances or fluid problems.

If you’re worried that your leg cramps are a sign of an underlying, significant medical condition, consult a doctor right once.

If a leg cramp persists for more than ten minutes or becomes excruciatingly painful, visit the emergency department. Go if you experience a leg cramp after touching something that might be harmful or contagious. For instance, if a cut on your skin comes into contact with dirt, you could contract tetanus or another bacterial infection. A reason to visit the emergency room should also be exposure to harmful substances like lead, mercury, or other poisons.
