What Causes Leg Cramps?

Body Position & Older Age

Sitting or lying in a certain way that restricts movement or blood flow to the legs, such as crossing one leg over the other in a seated position. Driving over a long distance exerts pressure or strains your leg muscles and can trigger this condition.

Older people are more likely to experience leg cramps because muscle loss begins at forty-five years old and muscle loss keeps increasing if the body is not active. As the human body age, it may also be more likely to have leg cramps at night. A recent study showed that up to thirty-three percent of persons aged fifty and above will experience chronic nocturnal leg cramps.
