Bone Marrow Biopsy and Aspiration

How Bone Marrow Aspiration Is Done?

You will wear a hospital gown and lie down on your side or belly. Your entire body will be covered with cloth except where your doctor is examining. Your temperature will be checked, heart rate and blood pressure [5] before the bone marrow aspiration.

You will be given a local anesthesia before the test is performed. This is mostly done at the top ridge of the rear of the hipbone. Sometimes it may be taken from the chest bone. In some cases, you may be given a mixture of IV diseases through the vein to aid sedation and pain.

Your doctor will place a hollow needle through your skin and inside the bone. The center portion of the needle is removed and a syringe is used to remove fluid out of the marrow. You may feel a bit weak. The area is bandaged after the teats and you will recuperate in another room before going home.
